About: Miriam Kalman Friedman

I am a retired English professor whose specialty is biography, autobiograpy, creative writing and women's studies. I have several books, both published and unpublished. These days I'm writing plays. LUNCH, which I co-authored with Leslie Rice Hart, has enjoyed two public readings and is ready for production. It has made the shortlist at The Plaza Theatre in Wharton, TX. Several short plays were produced in Houston play festivals, including: DIVINE CONTRACT, CRITICS' CHOICE and A DISCUSSION OF THE 'L' WORD. I am a member of Scriptwriters/ Houston and The Dramatist Guild of America. My second full length play, MAMA'S MAMA'S DIAMOND has had several private readings; currently I'm working on a revision to transform this Jewish Family Drama to a South Asian one, newly titled NANI MA'S DIAMOND. Three private readings have helped with the transformation. My two published books are: RAPE INCEST BATTERY: WOMEN WRITING OUT THE PAIN (TCU Press, 2000) and THE UNPREDICTABLE ADVENTURE (Syracuse UP, 1992) both of which I edited. For the past seven years, I ran the weight and wellness program at the OB/GYN office of my husband, Robert Friedman, MD. I counseled women and some men two days a week. Our program was very successful and gratifying and it's great working together. My husband closed his office about 6 months ago and is currently semi-retired and working in the area of correctional medicine, starting a new gig in February at a prison in Richmond. Four years ago this April, we joined Nu Skin as distributors for their nutritional supplements and skin care products, which we integrated into the practice; since closing the office, we continue to distribute and educate people in health, weight maintenance and anti-aging inside and out. We are very proud of our association with this fine company and the amazing people with whom we are affiliated. My PhD is from UT Dallas--a high quality institution well known for its interdisciplinary approach to the Humanities and for it's world class translation program. I feel fortunate to have received my credentials from such an awesome institution. Bobby and I have 5 children between us, 4 in-law children and 7 grandchildren. They live in Dallas and Odessa; and the youngest is a recent graduate of Northwestern, currently teaching English at Whitney Young in Chicago. My first grandson, Miles Harris Wucher will celebrate his Bar Mitzvah this January 16, 2016. All families are happy in similar ways and my wish is that all families can be as happy as we are these days. I started this blog back in 2010 and 2011. I haven't contributed to it in 4 years. It's my intention to place the thoughts that swirl in my brain into this semi-public forum and to occasionally post the appropriate ones on to the rather public forums of FB and Twitter.
